leaching1. A deliberate process of using excess water to remove excess salts from the soil, such as repeatedly top watering a houseplant so that the excess water flows into the ground or bowl beneath the plant to eliminate the white accumulation of salts on the surface of the soil. 2. The accidental removal of essential soil minerals from light sandy soils caused by overwatering or a year of excess rain.
