type One of several categories of herbarium specimens, chosen by taxonomists as being close or identical to that chosen by the original author.

biome-type (syn. biorealm) A group of similar biomes, such as the temperate deciduous biome-type which includes all the deciduous forests of eastern North America, China and Manchuria, and Europe.

forest type A stand of trees that is fundamentally similar throughout and can be predicted to occur elsewhere under comparable conditions. It includes temporary, permanent, climax, and cover types.

nomenclatural type That plant with which the name is permanently associated, not necessarily the most typical or representative of the taxon. See also: holotype, lectotype, neotype, isotype, syntype, topotype.
